Welcome to Miami (again), dear friends and fans of the.ego.tripper! In my previous blogpost I promised you something special. And here it is!
Today I’m taking you to Wynwood, one of the hottest, hippest, coolest neighborhoods of Miami. The Wynwood Arts District is home to over 70 art galleries, retail stores, antique shops, eclectic bars and one of the largest open-air street-art installations in the world: the Wynwood Walls. The Wynwood Walls was conceived by the renowned community revitalizer and placemaker, the late Tony Goldman in 2009. He was looking for something big to transform the warehouse district of Wynwood, and he arrived at a simple idea: “Wynwood’s large stock of warehouse buildings, all with no windows, would be my giant canvases to bring to them the greatest street art ever seen in one place.”
Needless to say the man succeeded. Since its inception, the Wynwood Walls program has seen over 50 artists representing 16 countries and have covered over 80,000 square feet of walls. With each year the Wynwood Walls endeavors to expand its breadth, introduce artists that have never exhibited before in the US and bring world class art to the community.
But also outside the Wynwood Walls street art is flourishing. Around every corner you may run into something mind-blowing. But why tell you about it, when I can show you? But before I do that, I’ll give you a few Wynwood tips. For great food and delicious cocktails you should go to Wynwood Kitchen and Bar. The restaurant features a floor-to-ceiling wallpapered mural by famed street artist Shepard Fairey in the bar area and in the dining room bright panoramic canvases by Christian Awe and a futuristic painting by Santiago Rubino.
If you really want to experience the neighborhood and learn more about the galleries and pieces of street art, you should go on a Wynwood Art Walk. Their guides really know their stuff! And for those of you who love specialty coffee, please try Panther Coffee, a Miami-based specialty coffee roaster.
Yes, I’ll shut up now.
